It’s the time of year when resolutions are dusted off or new ones created. As you think about what you want to accomplish in 2018, here are top predictions for fitness to spur ideas for your health and wellness goals.
1. Fitness with LIIT – Low-Intensity Interval Training
We’ve heard about HIIT, high-intensity interval training, and understand the cardio benefits of 15 minutes of fast-paced activity. LIIT is a new complement to HIIT that will become more popular in 2018. LIIT burns calories, but over a longer workout period. It focuses on control and good form across a variety of strength training and bodyweight cardio movements. LIIT incorporates a longer recovery time, too and is a good option for people new to fitness, or recovering from an injury.
2. Functional Fitness
Functional exercise strengthens you for the activities you do every day, like bending, twisting, reaching and lifting. A functional fitness program helps multiple muscles work together, helping you build a strong and stable core for 2018.
3. Fun Fitness
While push-ups can be fun for some, others are turning to playful activities to get fit in 2018. Handstands, hula hoops, and Trikke rides can take you back to a time when you focused on having fun and getting fit followed.
4. Fitness for Older Adults
Staying fit helps people of every age remain strong, and for our growing population of older adults, a stronger body helps maintain independence. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends 150 minutes of weekly exercise for older adults, with a mix of moderate aerobic and strength activities that work all muscle groups. This may seem like a lot of time, but a 10 to 15-minute Trikke ride every day in 2018 will help make this goal attainable.
5. Fit Mind and Body
Although mindfulness has been around for almost 30 years, only recently has the idea been paired with fitness. Look for meditation to be part of more fitness plans in 2018, as people realize the importance of centering their mind before and after working their body. We also expect to see more programs including exercises that improve focus and memory.
6. Fitness for Life
Fitness is becoming recognized as a key component of a healthy lifestyle, one as elemental as rest and good food. Expect to see fitness as a lifestyle choice in 2018 as more people mix purposeful and enjoyable fitness into their daily schedule.
Make 2018 a brighter year by incorporating fitness activities into your plans.
